The process involved in setting up a website, obtaining
a web address and making a website can be very confusing,
especially if you are new to computers and the internet.
We have tried to make our site jargon free where possible,
but to assist you a little more we have included a range
of common words relating to setting up your own website
which we are sure you'll find useful.
Website - An 'electronic page' on the
internet. This is a website.
Domain name - Click
here for Info on a Domain.
TLD - A 'top level domain'. A top level
domain is like a .com/.net.
Server - A specially designed computer
that a website is stored on.
Hosting - This is what we call it when
we put your website on our server.
Web design - Is the design of a website.
Upload / uploading - This is the term
used for putting your site on hosting.
FTP - File Transfer Protocol is an form
of uploading a website.
Software - A program that you have on
a pc/laptop/server.
Hardware - A physical part thats used
to make a pc/laptop/server.
E-commerce - This is a website that sells
products over the internet.
Shopping Cart - A Place to store products
on an e-commerce site.
Chat Room - A script on a website, that
lets you type messages to others.
Forum - A script that lets you store
messages for others to read.
Hard Drive - A piece of hardware that
stores long term information.
Scripting - A term used for web based
programs than enhance sites.
HTML - The standard language for creating
web pages.
Java - A client - side form of scripting.
PHP - A sever side scripting Language.
Flash - The industry standard for creating
animations for websites.
Shockwave - Similar to flash, but for
developing games etc.
Bandwidth - The term used for describing
data to and from a site.
Disk space - The space used on a hard
drive, or a server.
File size - The size of a file being
uploaded/downloaded/stored.
ADSL - Broadband - Is a form of internet
connection, but much faster.
Modem - The hardware used to connect
to internet.
ISDN - Another form of internet connection.
Not as fast as ADSL.
Domain extensions - The end of a domain,
